Gulabo Sitabo is the first Bollywood movie having A category star cast which directly released on OTT platform today. Shoojit Sircar’s Gulabo Sitabo is a dull film where brilliant actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana couldn’t bring back the film alive with their acting.

Gulabo Sitabo was about to release last year in November in the theatre but it kept on postponing until the makers decided to release it directly on OTT platform. The war between the digital platform and the theatre owners have raised with more and more release of the film directly on platforms like Prime and Disney Hotstar in India. Makers did the right thing by releasing it directly on OTT, as I am sure this film won’t have survived much.
The film starts with Mirza Nawab (Amitabh Bachchan) who rents people on his mansion with minimal rent pay. Mirza is an old man whos is always furious for the money. He seems very fond of his Mansion, which is more than 100 years old.
But one of his tenant Baankey Rastogi (Ayushmann Khurrana) has dues of his rent of months even though the rent is rupees 30. He got three sisters and a mother all living in a single room of the mansion. On the other hand, Mirza tries various antics like selling Rastogi’s bulb, cutting off electricity, locking the toilet for extorting the rent from him.
The film revolves around the mansion, Mirza’s extortion techniques, Rastogi’s silly tricks. Then there is ASI officer, Lawyer and builder all wanting the same thing the mansion. The lead roles, side ones too all acted well.

Gulabo Sitabo is based on Lucknow story and the dialogues are very well crafted. The first 20-30 minutes the film looks beautiful with funny moments. But as the movie goes on the drama gets very less engaging, overstretched. The main USP of the film was the chemistry between the landowner and the tenant, but the director fails to add the charm in it.
The story is quite simple and realistic, with no plot twists. After a while, it feels the movie is being dragged for no use. The film goes nowhere, was waiting for some twist or change in the plot but even the climax is not up to the mark. The movie goes on a single tone and ends. The songs are original and refreshing which I liked in the movie. The movie set is just okay, the portrayal of Lucknow city is also average. Amitabh Bachchan has never underplayed any character which has been assigned to him. Be it Piku, Pink or this movie, he simply wears the script and creates magic on the screen. His unblemished performance in the film didn’t come to me as a surprise, as we’ve seen the megastar weaving magic on the screen hundreds of times. Dialogues, acting and some fun moments that’s all the good parts in this latest Amazon prime film Gulabo Sitabo.
The movie is not so long, but it feels so as it got nothing much to give to its viewers. The movie mainly focuses on the character Mirza and Rastogi than setting a pace on story. Viewers don’t have much choice during this corona phase to watch still you can miss this latest family drama!!
